With the advancement of the dual-carbon strategy, building envelope insulation materials have undergone a comprehensive upgrade. Graphite polystyrene (SEPS), with its modified graphite composite technology, has become the core material for the exterior wall insulation of passive houses, ultra-low energy consumption residences, and public buildings, completely solving the industry pain points of poor insulation and insufficient fire resistance of traditional EPS.
Graphite polystyrene uses expandable polystyrene resin as a base, uniformly blending nano-flake graphite particles and environmentally friendly flame-retardant additives. Through pre-foaming, curing, and molding, it forms a dense closed-cell structure with over 98% internal density, constructing a dual insulation system of air barrier and infrared heat reflection. Ordinary EPS relies solely on closed pores to block air convection, while graphite particles act like billions of miniature mirrors, reflecting over 80% of infrared radiation heat flow. Its thermal conductivity is as low as ≤0.032W/(m・K), resulting in insulation efficiency more than 30% higher than ordinary EPS for the same thickness. In extremely cold and frigid regions, it can significantly reduce the thickness of the insulation layer, thus reducing the building load.
Fire safety is its core competitive advantage. Traditional EPS is only a B2-class combustible material, which is prone to melting and dripping when burning, spreading the fire. Graphite polystyrene, combined with a highly efficient flame-retardant formula, stably meets the national standard GB8624 B1-class flame-retardant standard. It self-extinguishes quickly when exposed to open flame, and the heat release rate and smoke density are greatly reduced. Under high temperature, the graphite layer quickly carbonizes to form a fireproof barrier layer, blocking oxygen penetration and greatly reducing the risk of fire spread on the exterior wall. It is suitable for high-rise residential buildings, schools, hospitals and other densely populated buildings.
The material boasts exceptional overall adaptability, with a closed-cell structure that is hydrophobic and moisture-proof, exhibiting a 24-hour water absorption rate of ≤3%, making it resistant to moisture damage and failure over long-term use. It also demonstrates excellent dimensional stability, with a high and low temperature cycle deformation rate of less than 0.3%, preventing issues such as hollowing, cracking, and shrinkage. The construction system is fully compatible with traditional EPS thin-plastering techniques, eliminating the need for equipment replacement or worker retraining. The bonding, anchoring, and finishing processes are mature, resulting in a significantly lower overall cost compared to polyurethane and phenolic insulation boards, offering outstanding value for money.
Beyond external wall insulation, the applications of graphite polystyrene continue to expand: it can be used for roof insulation, underfloor heating insulation layers, cold storage and cold chain enclosures, integrated insulation and decorative panel core materials, and roadbed frost protection insulation. The material is free of Freon and harmful halogens, and its production and use are both low-carbon and environmentally friendly. With a service life of over 25 years, it is a new generation of green insulation substrate that balances safety, energy saving, cost, and durability. It is also the preferred material for achieving near-zero energy consumption in buildings and reducing heating and cooling energy consumption.
